…21st May, 2023…, the day that, during my fifth trip to Sikkim, I got the chance to travel and learn about the region’s unmatched cultural richness and age-old traditions. It was about the Sikkimmese Bhutiya (also known as Bhotia people), an indigenous ethnic minority living in the state of Sikkim. Some of the important festivals observed by this community include Losar, Saga Dawa, and Bhumchu.
I was thrilled to have the opportunity to explore the Bhutiya community house after learning about its rich cultural history and historical significance. As a travel enthusiast, I am always keen to immerse myself in local culture and learn about the traditions and customs of the countries I visit.

The Bhutia community’s dwelling reflects their rich cultural heritage and traditional way of life, often constructed of wood and stone, with intricate carving and colorful paintings covering the walls.
The existence of a prayer room in the Bhutia community’s residence is a distinguishing feature. This chamber is considered sacred and is often lavishly decorated with religious symbols and statues.
The architecture of Bhutia dwellings is designed to endure the harsh mountain climate, with solid walls and sloping roofs to prevent snow accumulation. The houses are also built on high platforms to prevent flooding during the monsoon season.
There are typically separate sections in a house for various activities including sleeping, dining, and cooking. Traditional Bhutia art and furnishings are frequently used to decorate the main living room, exhibiting their craftsmanship and artistic abilities.
Families and friends congregate at the Bhutia community’s house to celebrate holidays, engage in traditional dances, and other activities. Their close-knit community and strong ties to their cultural heritage are symbolized by it.
